Craftsman bungalows, waterfront cabins, historic districts — some homes simply belong in wood, and cedar has been the Northwest's siding for a century for good reason. It's workable, naturally decay-resistant, and unlike any composite, a damaged board can be repaired or replaced one piece at a time.
Every profile below can be stained, painted, or left to weather — we'll show you what each choice means for upkeep.
Honesty first: wood is the highest-maintenance siding you can put on a Northwest home. Plan on a stain or paint cycle every few years, seasonal checks for moss at joints and shaded walls, and keeping plantings trimmed back so the siding can dry. Skip that work and cedar fails faster here than almost anywhere — damp is patient.
Good installation stretches every one of those intervals: back-priming boards before they go up, correct clearances from grade and roofing, stainless fasteners that won't streak, and a rainscreen detail that lets the wall breathe. That's how we install it — cedar done right starts life with decades in it.
If you love your existing cedar and it's structurally sound, targeted repair is often the right answer — we replace individual boards, rebuild rotted sections, and match profiles so the patch disappears. When rot is widespread, we'll tell you, and you'll choose between new cedar and a lower-maintenance look-alike.
Many of our customers who start on this page land on LP SmartSide (real wood grain, far less upkeep) or HardieShingle (the shingle look in fiber cement). We'll show you all three side by side at the showroom — no pressure toward any of them.
