WHY AN EXTERIOR CONTRACTOR

A Deck Is Attached to Your Wall

The most expensive deck failures aren't in the boards — they're where the ledger meets the house. A badly flashed ledger funnels years of rain into the wall behind it, and we've rebuilt enough of those walls to detail this connection obsessively. Building decks as an exterior contractor means that joint gets siding-grade waterproofing, every time.

WHAT WE BUILD

Decks for How You Actually Live

Composite Decking

Trex-style boards that ignore rain, skip the stain cycle, and keep their color — the Northwest default for good reason.

Cedar Decks

Classic Northwest decking — cooler underfoot and beautiful, with honest guidance on the upkeep it takes here.

Railing Systems

Wood, composite, aluminum, and cable railing — code-compliant heights and spacing, chosen for your view and style.

Re-Surfacing

Sound frame, tired boards? New decking and railing over your existing structure saves thousands over a rebuild.

Stairs & Landings

Code-compliant stairs, landings, and grade transitions that make the deck usable from every door and path.

Rot-Aware Rebuilds

Posts, beams, and ledgers inspected and rebuilt where needed — with photos, so you see exactly what you're paying for.

Lighting & Finishing Touches

Low-voltage stair and rail lighting, fascia wraps, and skirting that finish the deck like part of the house.

Covered & Waterproof Decks

Membrane and drainage details for decks over living space, or patios that need dry storage below.

Composite or Cedar for a Northwest Deck?

Composite decking — Trex and its peers — has largely won this climate for one reason: it doesn't care about being wet for five months. No annual staining, no splinters, no moss-fed rot in the boards. It costs more per foot than cedar and gets warmer underfoot in direct sun, but over a decade the maintenance math usually favors it decisively here.

Cedar still earns its place: it's cooler underfoot, costs less up front, and nothing else looks or smells like it. The honest trade is a re-stain cycle every couple of years and vigilance about shaded, damp corners. We build both — and either way, the framing underneath is pressure-treated and detailed to shed water, because that's where decks actually die.

Rebuild, Re-Surface, or Repair?

If your frame is sound but the boards are done, a re-surface — new decking and railing over the existing structure — saves real money. If posts, beams, or the ledger show rot or movement, we'll show you photos and price the rebuild honestly. And if the deck is fine but tired, sometimes the right scope is just railing and stairs.

Decks attached to the house need permits in most municipalities, and railing height and stair codes apply — we pull the permits and build to pass, same as every exterior project we do.

Decking Questions, Answered Straight

Usually yes for attached decks, and rules vary by municipality — height, setbacks, railing, and stair codes all apply. We handle the permit and build to pass inspection, the same way we run siding and window projects.
