WHY LP SMARTSIDE

Tougher Than It Looks

Homeowners usually pick SmartSide for the look — the grain reads as real cedar because it is made from real wood. What keeps them happy is the toughness: it shrugs off hail, ladders, and stray baseballs that would chip fiber cement, and long boards mean fewer seams on your walls.

How Engineered Wood Survives a Wet Climate

SmartSide starts as wood strands, which are coated with zinc-borate treatment, bonded under heat and pressure with marine-grade waxes and resins, and finished with a resin-saturated overlay. The treatment is what matters here: it runs through the entire board, not just the surface, so a cut edge or a nail hole doesn't become the place rot starts the way it does with plain wood.

Like every siding, it still depends on what's behind it. Our installs pair SmartSide with a weather barrier and flashing detailed for wind-driven rain, and we follow LP's application requirements on gapping, fastening, and edge sealing — the details that keep the manufacturer warranty intact.

SmartSide or Fiber Cement?

This is the comparison most homeowners actually face, and there's no universal winner. SmartSide is lighter, tougher against impact, comes in longer lengths with fewer seams, and usually costs a bit less installed. Fiber cement is non-combustible, completely inert against moisture and insects, and tends to hold paint longer.

Shaded, damp, moss-prone walls lean fiber cement. Homes that take physical abuse — kids, hail exposure, tight lots where ladders live against the siding — lean SmartSide. Most of the time the honest answer comes from walking your specific house, which is what the free estimate is for.

FAQ

LP SmartSide Questions, Answered Straight

Yes — it's made from real wood strands, which is why the grain looks authentic. The strands are treated with zinc borate against rot and insects, then bonded with resins and waxes into boards that behave far more predictably than sawn lumber.
