LOCAL KNOWLEDGE

What Friday Harbor Homes Ask of an Exterior

Friday Harbor stacks a century of town building onto one hillside above the ferry landing: 1890s–1900s commercial blocks and homes around Spring Street — the core of a designated historic district — cannery-era cottages from the years when the Island Packing Company was the biggest employer on the waterfront, mid-century stock up the hill, and newer construction toward the airport. All of it is marine-exposed on a harbor that faces the weather, and salt corrodes cheap fasteners and hardware years before siding boards themselves fail.

Permits inside town limits run through the Town of Friday Harbor's Building Division, and exterior changes in the historic district also go before the town's Historic Preservation Review Board, which looks at materials, window design, and architectural detail. We build that review and the ferry schedule into the project timeline together — our supplier delivers materials to your site by ferry before start day, and our crew rides over for day one — so nothing becomes a mid-project surprise.

WHAT WE FIND ON FRIDAY HARBOR INSPECTIONS
Corroded fasteners on every exposure — the town sits on a working harbor with salt air on all sides
Moving wood siding under old paint — 1900s-era town stock repainted for a century instead of repaired
Chalked and blistered harbor-facing walls — sun plus salt coming straight off the water
Improvised past repairs — island jobs done with whatever material was on hand that week
Pitted hardware and hinges — marine air working on original fittings

LOCAL BUILDING HISTORY

How Friday Harbor Was Built

Friday Harbor exists because somebody needed a county seat. Edward Warbass, who helped push the creation of San Juan County, claimed 160 acres above the harbor in the early 1870s specifically to plant the county government there — and the town that grew around the courthouse landing became the only incorporated town in the entire county, voting itself into existence 70 to 55 in February 1909.

The waterfront paid the bills. The Island Packing Company opened its salmon cannery at the base of East Street in 1894 and grew into one of the largest structures and employers on the harbor. Cannery paychecks, the county payroll, and the merchants of Spring Street filled the blocks above the landing with simple wood-sided homes and false-front commercial buildings — old-growth lumber, double-hung windows, built plain and built to last.

That early core survived intact enough to become a designated historic district, and the town now runs exterior changes there through its Historic Preservation Review Board — materials, window design, and architectural detail all get looked at. For homeowners, that means the oldest stock in town carries both a century of paint over moving wood siding and a review step that rewards materials which genuinely match the period look.

The rest of the hillside filled in by era: mid-century homes up the hill as ferry service made the island reachable, newer construction spreading toward the airport. Every generation of it answers to the same conditions — salt air off a working harbor that corrodes fasteners and hardware long before siding fails — which is exactly the lens we inspect through.
