The setting that makes it worth living here is also the exterior challenge: full forest canopy, lake moisture, and long shaded seasons that feed moss and hold water against north-facing walls. Much of the housing dates to the '70s–'90s, and original cedar in deep shade is usually where we find the rot.

Window replacement →Sudden Valley didn't grow the way most towns do — it was drawn. In 1968, Glen and Betty Corning sold 1,200 forested acres on Lake Whatcom's western shore, and developer Ken Sanwick's Sudden Valley Inc. set out to plat a recreational community that would disappear into the trees rather than clear them. Whatcom County approved the first plat — 158 lots west of Lake Whatcom Boulevard — in 1969, and the first lots sold that spring.
The first generation of buildings matched the sales pitch: weekend cabins, A-frames, and chalet-style vacation homes on steep forest lots, many bought as getaways by Canadians. They were built like getaways, too — light structures with cedar skins and big lake-facing glass, never intended to face fifty wet winters as somebody's only house.
That's exactly what most of them ended up doing. As Bellingham housing grew more expensive, the cabins converted to year-round homes, and through the '80s and '90s conventional houses filled the remaining lots — much of it wearing the cedar and wood-based panel sidings of those decades. The Sudden Valley Community Association, incorporated in 1973 out of the original community club, has governed the whole valley ever since, with Architectural Control Committee review on every exterior change.
That history is the exterior story we walk into on every estimate: early-'70s structures carrying vacation-grade flashing and original single-pane glass into their sixth decade, '80s–'90s wood sidings at the end of their service life, and all of it under a canopy that never lets a north wall dry. The homes were designed for the forest — our job is making their exteriors survive it.
