LOCAL KNOWLEDGE

What Bow Homes Ask of an Exterior

Bow is really two territories: Chuckanut and Bow Hill carry view homes and forest parcels where evergreen shade feeds moss and north walls never dry, while the Samish flats below run farmhouses and homesteads in open wind with salt air drifting off Samish Bay — close enough to corrode cheap hardware on bay-facing walls. The housing stock matches: newer view construction and cabins up high, generational farm stock below, and the Edison hamlet's old storefront buildings at the edge.

Bow is unincorporated, so jurisdiction sits with Skagit County Planning & Development Services in Mount Vernon — and county code exempts like-for-like siding and window replacement with no framing changes from a building permit. Shoreline and steep-slope parcels are the ones to check: within about 200 feet of the bay, shoreline rules can still apply, and critical-area review can too. We've pulled and passed across Skagit County, we confirm parcel requirements before filing, and we handle the process start to finish, foothill or flats.

WHAT WE FIND ON BOW INSPECTIONS
Moss-fed rot on forest-shaded walls — Chuckanut canopy that never lets north faces dry
Salt-dulled hardware on bay-facing walls — Samish Bay air reaching the flats
Wind-worked courses on open parcels — flats gusts with no windbreak
Slope-side staging damage — view homes where past crews cut corners on access
Soft sills on generational farmhouses — decades of weather on original wood

PRICING

What Moves the Cost in Bow?

Every bid is measured on site and itemized — these are the factors that actually change the number.

Home Size & Stories

Wall area drives material; height drives scaffold time. A Chuckanut view home on a slope prices differently than a flats farmhouse with easy staging.

Siding replacement →
Hidden Rot

What's behind the old siding is the honest unknown — we scope known rot into the bid and price discovered rot transparently, per repair.

Bow Exterior Questions, Answered Straight

Yes — slope staging is planned into the bid, not improvised on site. Access and scaffolding are itemized so you see exactly what the terrain costs.
LOCAL BUILDING HISTORY

How Bow Was Built

Bow's oldest housing stands on ground pulled out of Samish Bay. The Samish flats were tidal marsh until settlers diked them in the late 1880s, and by 1890 the reclaimed land carried some of the county's finest farms — hay, oats, and dairy herds — with Edison as their trading town. The farmhouses those families built in the 1890s–1910s are still the backbone of the flats: plain old-growth frame houses with barns that outnumber them, sitting in open wind a mile from salt water.

Bow itself is a railroad creation. William J. Brown homesteaded the site around 1869–71, and when the Great Northern built its Chuckanut cut-off in 1901–02 it put the district's new station on his land — named Bow, at Brown's suggestion, after London's Bow station. The little cluster of buildings at Bow corner dates from that era, and Chuckanut Drive, finished as a scenic highway in 1916, strung early cottages and roadhouses along the mountain's foot.

The bay kept working too. Pacific oysters got their American start here — Japanese seed oysters planted in Samish Bay in 1919 seeded the beds that companies like Rock Point Oyster Co. built into an industry through the 1920s — and the oyster water at Edison's edge is still working tideland today. It is also why bay-facing walls on the flats live in genuinely salt-tinged air.

The newer chapters climbed the hill: mid-century ramblers around Bow and Blanchard, then view homes and cabins spread through the Chuckanut and Bow Hill forest from the 1970s on. That split defines the work now — century-old farmhouses taking open-flats wind and salt air below, and shaded foothill walls that never dry out above, two exposures that get specced like different counties.
