About This Project
This Anacortes split-entry came to us wearing its original painted wood panel siding — worn, chalky, and ready for more than another coat of paint. The owners wanted a true modernization: new siding, new windows, new doors, and eventually new outdoor living space, all delivered as one coordinated project instead of years of piecemeal contractors.
It ended up being three projects in one — the re-side, the windows and doors, and an outdoor-living package added mid-project once the owners saw the exterior coming together. One crew, one coordinated schedule, no second contractor to manage.
The Re-Side: Evening Blue, Board and Batten
Every wall was stripped to the sheathing and inspected; rotted OSB was cut out and replaced before anything new went on. The house was then wrapped in fresh Tyvek HomeWrap with DuPont flashing tape sealing every window and door opening, plus new Z-metal flashing above each unit — the water management layer nobody sees and everybody depends on.
Then the siding system: HardiePanel in Cedarmill texture installed vertically with HardieBatten boards making the full board-and-batten design, 3.5-inch HardieTrim at every window, door, and corner, and HardiePlank lap siding accenting the gables. Every panel, batten, and board was special-ordered in James Hardie "Evening Blue" ColorPlus — a Statement Collection color for the panels and battens, matched by Dream Collection trim — a factory-baked finish carried across the entire exterior for a monolithic, modern look with no repaint cycle. (Hardie's color collections shift over time — ask us for the current lineup.) Fascias, eaves, and new HardieSoffit panels were painted in Sherwin-Williams SuperPaint, and every joint was sealed with OSI QUAD MAX, James Hardie's preferred caulking.
Windows and Doors, All at Once
Re-siding is the right moment to replace windows — the flashing integrates properly and the trim goes on once. This home received fourteen Andersen 100 Series windows in black-on-black: gliders, picture windows, and a tempered satin-etch privacy pair where the bathrooms face the yard. All fourteen are dual-pane Low-E glass, argon-filled, with U-factors down to 0.28 — a serious efficiency jump from the originals.
Three doors completed the set: an Andersen 100 Series slider, a Milgard V400 slider with blinds sealed between the glass (chosen for exactly that feature) replacing an old French door, and a custom Codel entry door, painted in-house to suit the new exterior.
The Outdoor-Living Expansion
Mid-project, the owners decided the decks should match the house — and brought us the work rather than a second contractor. We rebuilt three deck surfaces in Trex Transcend "Spiced Rum", laid with a picture-frame border, hidden fasteners throughout, color-matched plugs where face-fastening was unavoidable, and joist and rim tape protecting the framing underneath. Color-matched Trex fascia and riser fascia finish every visible edge.
The railing is the detail everyone notices: RDI MetalWorks Excalibur powder-coated steel with solid posts — commercial-grade hardware on a residential deck — topped with solar post caps that light the decks and stairs every night, no wiring required, over black Trex lattice skirting below.

But there were a lot of different options, and Michael was always happy to revise quotes and offer multiple line-item options so that we could tailor everything to our needs while still staying within budget.
